Annie Davie-Martin was the third child of Adam and Ann Davie-Martin. Adam Davie-Martin (1830-1890) and his wife Ann, (called Dale) nee Meikle (1831-1911) from Dumfries, (a town or a city today) up from the Firth of Solway, Scotland arrived in New Zealand on the first of July 1852 by the sailing ship Cresswell. A story told by members of the family is that Adam was the son of a well-to-do family. Ann was a servant, employed as the children's nanny. Adam wanted to marry Ann but the family disapproved. Marrying a servant in the 1840's was not socially acceptable so Adam was sent off to the family's sugar plantations in Jamaica for two years where it was hoped he would forget Ann. However, when he returned he still wanted to marry Ann. He did so but was disinherited and sent to New Zealand. Adam worked as an accountant in Auckland for a short while before moving to Lagoon Bay, and then on to Tiller's Bay. Tiller's Bay was later renamed Martin's Bay but possibly by common usage. Life was not easy at the Bay but Adam found the climate ideal for growing fruit and vegetables for the Auckland markets. He often rowed to Auckland leaving the bay on an outgoing tide. He would then wait at the tip of Whangaparaoa Peninsula for an ingoing tide to go on to Auckland. Adam was also an excellent shot and in the game season supplied Auckland hotels with pheasant and duck. In their 'spare time' Adam and Ann managed to raise 13 children, seven boys and six girls. 1. Margaret Alice, b 1853, who married John Barton, an old time coach-driver on various routes, converging on Warkworth village and going by way of Kaipara Flats to Devonport (Flagstaff) via the east coast road from Weiti (Silverdale). 2. John, b 1854, who married Eliza Buchanan, of Lower Matakana, (Sandspit) 3. Annie, b. 14.11.1856 who married Alexander Trotter who lived in the area by Mahurangi River and Sandspit Road. 4. Adam 2, (called Peter) b. 1858 married Isabella Trotter (Alexander’s sister) This family lived at Woodcocks Road but later decendants farmed at Komokoriki Hill. 5+6. The twins, Euphemia and Hellen b. 1860. Euphemia married George Guest a Warkworth businessman. Hellen married William McIndoe and moved from the district. 7. James, b. 1862,remained single and later moved north to the Hokianga 8. Francis, b 1863 who married Margaret Zealand Oakes and they started the Falls Road branch of Davie-Martins.. 9. Mary, b.1865 was known as Polly and remained single. 10. Edward Ramsay, b. 1868 remained single and with his brother, 11. Robert, b. 1870, worked the beach farm at the bay. 12. Donald. b. 1872 married Faith Rose Birdsall from the Omaha family. In 1919 at the age of 47 Donald was fatally injured from a horse accident. Their two sons Arthur and Douglas, when they were old enough took over the running of the farm from Edward and Robert. Today, Arthur and Doug's sons John and Graham are still farming on the property. Doug’s daughter Gay is married to Neville Noyer a Warkworth builder. 13. Demaris Christina Isabella, b. 1875 married Thomas George Parvin who worked for the Auckland Tramways.
