Trotter Genealogy

The Scottish name Trotter is occupational in orgin, (like many others), being derived from the work a man did.  In this case the name originates with the old French word "Trotteur" meaning "a runner or messenger"
There was Border clan of this name, the head of which was Trotter of Prentannan.  The Trotters of Mortonhall near Edinburgh dated back to the reign of Robert 2nd (1370-1390).     John Trotter who held land in Coldringham  in 1512.    Peter Trotar who held land in Reidpeth.etc  Note variations of Surname did occur from  time to time with another example being "Trotman" which uses the same Coat of Arms.
